Fanz Josef Glacier

My last stop in New Zealand was the Franz Josef glacier. After visiting several other glaciers along the way, I decided to splurge on a heli-hike -- helicoptering to/from the glacier and then hiking about on the glacier with a guide. You just can't get close enough to really "see" the glacier by driving and walking up to it's base.

It was my first time in a helicopter (it was so much smoother than I thought it would be) so that was very cool and indeed, I got to see the glacier in a way I would never have from the base of the glacier. The "traffic jamb" of groups on the glacier ... that, I could have done without ;-)

  • Landing on the glacier and disembarking... The most nerve wracking part is not so much the blades spinning above your head ... it's the icy steps you need to negotiate!

  • At each bridge, one side is the "give way" side and that establishes who has right of way... Remarkably efficient, but a bit nerve wrecking if you're not paying attention!
